The gasoline-oxygen cutting torch can cut steel better than an exothermic cutting system and faster than oxyacetylene—with fewer slag problems. It is also cheaper to use and to train personnel in its use. In a training session, we had firefighters with little or no experience with the tool able to cut thick pieces of steel fairly quickly within a few hours. It is not a new tool; it has been around for about 27 years.
I never heard of or saw a gasoline-oxygen cutting torch until a few months ago when I attended a heavy rigging class at the NASA Ames Research Facility near Moffet Air Force Base. Robert Tooker, a heavy rigger for the CATF-3 USAR team based in the Menlo Park Fire Department, was lead instructor for the steel-cutting portion. He told me he was introduced to the gasoline-oxygen cutting torch by the USAR team from Puget Sound, Washington, while in New York. Once I used this tool, I was hooked. Throughout the class, I kept thinking, "Why didn't I hear of this tool if it has been around for 27 years?" I felt relieved when Tooker told me he had never heard of a gasoline-oxygen cutting torch either, even though he had been a metal fabricator and blacksmith for 20 years.
Here is how the gasoline-oxygen-cutting torch works. You fill up a small pressurized gas can and attach it to a special torch using the special gasoline hose. Then you hook up the oxygen line, as you would with an oxyacetylene system. The liquid gas is mixed with the oxygen in the tip of the torch, which produces a flame similar to oxyacetylene's neutral flame.
Most fire departments and rescue squads are on tight budgets. The gasoline-oxygen cutting torch could cut training costs by approximately 80 percent over the oxyacetylene cutting system. When you use a large tip, as you would have to for the type of cutting needed in a large building collapse, you go through many bottles of oxygen and acetylene, which are fairly expensive (for training as well). The U.S. Department of Energy has used the gasoline-oxygen cutting torch to dismantle large nuclear reactors and has published extensive reports showing dramatic cost and time savings compared with other metal-burning equipment.
